Nudity. A controversial subject that many would rather not discuss.
Some find it arousing while others find it lewd and offensive. In San Francisco
nudity is a casual reality in many places. Although against the law, people
still walk around without any discomfort exposing their entire body. As for
everyone else in the nation, I’m sure very few people want to walk around
without any clothes. I personally would
not want to see people casually exposing their body while dining out at a
buffet.
There would be many problems associated with nudity if it was a casual
practice. The first problem is that the body secretes internal substances. The
human body naturally secretes genital fluid when exposed and aroused. If people
were to walk around nude casually, they would need to bring a towel to sit on.
The second problem is not properly maintaining hygiene. The body eventually
smells bad if you don’t maintain it. This would imply washing to eliminate the
odors. It would be difficult to be around a person if they smell terrible. The
third problem is that some people are really hard to look at. It’s one thing to
want to show off a wonderfully fit and toned body, but hard to see someone’s
body that is morbidly obese or covered in hair. It seems obvious that many
people are not use to seeing large body sizes. The fourth problem is the tendency
to be aroused. For most in public, people can control their ability to be
aroused. It’s the same behavior demonstrated when one’s at a pool.
Nevertheless, more than often individuals might see a body that arouses them
which could allow hormones to lead to erect physical properties. This can be unintentionally
distracting. The fifth problem, many members of society simply do not
like it. It could be offending because of one’s culture, religion, moral beliefs
or personal insecurities. The sixth and final problem is indecent behavior and crime. Subjecting
oneself to nudity can lead to indecent and immoral behavior for some because of arousal or
if under the influence; it can also have consequences because of potential harm by others.
Now that I have established the problems associated with nudity
as a casual form, it’s best to see what are possible positive functions of
casual nudity if it was norm in society. The first function is that it affects
one’s self-image. An individuals that has no issues showing off their body may
seem comfortable with themselves. The individual may also feel open and willing
to express their behaviors freely without embarrassment. The second function affects
others by showing the human anatomy. Genders may loose the desire or curiosity to
see the body of another as they familiarize seeing it (this would also most likely
lead to possible relationship desirability based on status, attitude and personality).
This is seen in many nudist colonies and native tribes. The third function is
that it seems society that is associated with nudity are less formal. It seems long
term individuals around a nudist beach or colony are more disciplined at the
sight of nudity. It seems they are more embracive and willing to accept others with
similar values. The fourth function is comfortablility. It’s a norm for a member
of society to sleep wearing nothing. They do this because of personal comfort
or that it suits them. Another reason they would consider wearing nothing is when
the temperature get too hot and the protrusion of sweat is intolerable. This is
to retain comfort or become comfortable. The fifth function is desexualized
views. Individuals around a nudity-free environment seem to carry the view that
nudity is natural phenomenon. Just like in native tribes, people eventually
become accustom to nudity. It’s also my hypothesis that there is possibly a positive
effect on married couples. The sixth function is the use of attraction, promotion
and consumption. The use of nudity attracts attention and visual arousal. Nudity
can be seen in many art pieces and runway fashion. The use of nudity is illustrious
in the art world because of its use of forms. It can be visually delightful and
emotionally portrayed. The use of attraction can be used for not only artistic purposes
but for possible promotional purposes, such as: naked yoga, feminist protests groups,
or even for promoting foreign skin care product like Fa NutriSkin, from Belgium,
which utilized a nude female within its public TV advertisements. It can also
be used to want people to buy products or services that can alter one’s appearance,
such as the use of skin care products and tanning salons.
Now that the negative and positive perspectives are out of
the way, I will state my opinion about the idea of nudity.
Foremost, I do not believe nudity is sexual, because
sexuality implies immoral behavior or action. I believe nudity is normal. Everybody
has a body and eventually knows what features the opposite gender has. I also believe
it doesn’t affect children nor does harm to society. I believe nudity should be
embraces and overlooked. This does not mean everyone should have the ability to
walk around naked all the time or just because they can, it means when people see
nudity they shouldn't be bothered by it. It should be one's respectable decision to show off their body
or keep their body private. I believe clothes are to be worn to show
decency and respect for others around them. However, I do believe there should
be occasions in which nudity should be tolerable and permissible; such as:
days of high humidity and temperatures; maybe around water or certain recreational facilities
(having the option of wearing a bathing suit or fitness clothes); around one’s
home; public beaches; open baths or showers; or luxury locations (like tanning,
spas and massage parlors). I believe nudity should be something that people
sometimes or not often see, but when they do see it, they don’t mind or pay attention to it; like a doctor working with a
patient. I also believe that nudity can be a certain kind of innocence or form
of humility. For example: I believe the allowance to see the body of another
should be appreciated, depending on the individual’s physique (if it’s
delightful to see or not), because they are demonstrating a sense of humility.
I also find children having the freedom to run around without clothes shows a
sense of innocence and purity. To me, it feels very harmonious and natural. In
my own words, perhaps I see nudity in a way of an artists, because I love the
human form. I think by allowing nudity to be a neutral coherence in society, individuals
will sees similarities and how everyone is simply a human-being. I predict this
will help with social harmony.
